Montagu Road Under Road Culvert - Tefco

Montagu Road Under Road Culvert

Heavy rainfall in the Circular Head region of Tasmania is a common occurrence, and the frequent flooding of Montagu Road has become a persistent issue. Drainage improvements on surrounding farmland increased the runoff to the road drainage system, overloading the existing 450mm concrete culvert. This not only created a serious risk to traffic but also led to ongoing costs for the council due to repeated pavement and seal repairs.

Following a catchment analysis conducted by the Council’s Engineering Team, twin 600mm culverts were recommended to provide adequate cover over the pipes and ensure proper fall on the outlet. Having experienced years of reliable performance, the council chose Corrutech pipes, paired with Poly Headwalls – a decision that proved to be a game changer.

Project Details:
  • The Challenge: Frequent road flooding due to increased runoff
  • Existing System: Single 450mm concrete culvert
  • Materials Used: 2 x 600mm Corrutech Pipes, paired with Twin Poly Headwalls
  • Installation Window: 2 days
Key Highlights:
  • Efficient Installation: Lightweight materials enabled quicker handling and allowed the council to complete the project within two days using smaller machinery.
  • Traffic Impact: The ease of installation reduced the need for heavy equipment, allowing one lane to remain open for traffic during works.
  • Proven Product Performance: Corrutech pipes are valued for their exceptional strength, durability, and straightforward installation.
  • Long Term Reliability: The council is confident that the new system will prevent future flooding, reducing the need for ongoing maintenance and repairs.

Corrutech Pipes have been a trusted choice by this council for years, valued for their strength, cost effectiveness, and ease of transport and installation. While there was initial hesitation to switch from precast concrete headwalls, Tefco’s Poly Headwalls proved to be exceptionally robust and easy to handle. Despite a slightly higher unit price, the savings on transport and installation quickly offset the difference, making them the clear choice.

The installation was seamless, and the project was completed well within the planned two day window, with minimal disruption to traffic. Thanks to the lightweight nature of the materials, the council used a five-ton digger, keeping costs low and making it possible to maintain a lane of traffic on the narrow road during installation.

With the new twin culvert system in place, the risk of future flooding has been significantly reduced. The council is confident that this location will remain trouble free and plans to continue using the Corrutech and Poly Headwalls combination for future drainage projects.

Customer Testimonial

“As a Roads Construction and Maintenance Supervisor for the Circular Head Council, in the far North West of Tasmania, which is renowned for its rainfall, maintaining adequate drainage of our near 800km, mostly rural road network is a constant challenge.

Having started with council almost fifteen years ago as a roads serviceman I’ve had the opportunity to install dozens, if not hundreds of culvert pipes and headwalls of all sizes in all sorts of locations and challenging conditions, and for many years concrete was the only option.

Thankfully, poly culvert pipes have become available, and I have tried most, if not all the brands, and for the last five years or so chose to use Corrutech pipes by Tefco. I find Corrutech pipes to be excellent quality, competitively priced, readily available, and the service from Tefco is second to none.

Recently we trialed Tefco’s HDPE headwalls and while I was skeptical, we found them to be an excellent product that is surprisingly strong as well as being extremely easy to transport and install.”
